Gilda D. (Gid) Byrnes, Northern Cambria died Sunday, September 3, 2023, at Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg. Born October 4, 1931, in Hastings, the daughter of Anthony and Elizabeth (Coccaro) Martucci. Preceded in death by parents; husband, R. Thomas Byrnes, who died November 10, 1986; sisters, Mary D. Byrnes, Elanor Tindiglia, Grace Sponsky, Josephine Martucci, Gloria Pacella. Survived by her sisters, Sylvia, widow of the late John Vorasky, Mayfield Heights, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews, who were all very special to their aunt.
Gilda was a member of Prince of Peace Roman Catholic Church, Northern Cambria, where she especially enjoyed having the privilege of being a reader and eucharistic minister at mass. She was secretary of its Altar and Rosary; past treasurer of the Prince of Peace Secular Franciscan Order; and past treasurer of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, No. 722. She was also a life member of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, state, and local chapters. Mrs. Byrnes was a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a master’s degree in education/business education major. She taught at Hastings-Elder School District and Northern Cambria School District, having retired from there.
Friends will be received at Barrett Funeral Home, 822 Philadelphia Ave., Northern Cambria, Friday, September 8, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. at Prince of Peace Church, 811 Chestnut Ave., Northern Cambria with Rev. Mark E. Groeger officiating. Interment will be at St. Bernard Cemetery, Hastings.
