John J. Contres, Sr.

John J. Contres, Sr., 93, Hastings, formerly of Northern Cambria passed away on October 23, 2022, at home. Born May 5, 1929, in Ralphton, Somerset County. Son of Jess and Kathryn (Kisula) Contres. Preceded in death by wife, former Phyllis H. Farabaugh, May 19, 2011; son, Jim, killed in a fire truck accident Nov. 13, 1975; brothers, William and Robert, and sister, Helen Hileman.

Survived by Children, retired U.S. Navy Captain Kathlene Contres , The Villages, FL; Charles L. (Lynn Kopas), Durham, NC; Paula A. (Joseph) Maurer, Nicktown; Michael A. Hastings; Theodore R., Ephrata; 8 grandchildren, Kalie R. (Dominic) Acquarulo, Alicia (Kevin) Tanceusz, Casey Contres, Nathan (Tiffany Springer) Maurer, Nicholas (Ashley Pershing) Maurer, Deanna (Matthew) Moriarty, Brittany Contres, and Ryan Contres; ten great grandchildren, Isaac, Arya and Enzo Acquarulo; Nataly and Levi Maurer; and Lainey and Ethan Maurer; and Tucker and Rowan Tanceusz; brother, Richard, York and many nieces and nephews.

Graduate of McAllister School of Embalming, NYC. John was a partner with James Long, Jr. at the Long Funeral Home. He previously worked at Ballard-Durand Funeral Home, White Plains, NY and Edwin L. Bennett Funeral Home, Tarrytown/Scarsdale, NY. He was a proud Army Veteran of the Korean War. John loved camping, fishing, golfing, and spending time with his grandchildren.

John was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church where he served as past president Holy Name Society, Holy Cross Cemetery Association. He was also a member of the Barnesboro Legion Post #508. Past president Barnesboro Lions Club, Knights of Columbus Council 2277 Barnesboro, member 4th degree Prince Gallitzin Assembly, former member Cambria Caravan #240 Barnesboro. Past president Cambria Hills Golf Course and served over 40 years on their board of directors.

Friends will be received from 4p.m to 8p.m. Friday, October 28,2022 at Barrett Funeral Home, 822 Philadelphia Ave., Northern Cambria and Saturday, Oct. 29, 2022, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, October 29, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at Prince of Peace Roman Catholic Church, 811 Chestnut Ave., Northern Cambria. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Kofc 2277 Barnesboro Council, 1112 Chestnut Ave., Northern Cambria or to a charity of your choice.
