Maryann C. Potgurney

               Sister (Baptista) Maryann C. Potgurney, 90, of Northern Cambria passed away early Friday morning, October 20, 2023, at home. She was born February 9, 1933, in Spangler, a daughter of the late, John and Anna (Platko) Potgurney. Also preceded by two sisters, Kathryn Kriss and Caroline Renz; a brother, Joseph and two nieces, Georgann Gressley and Barbara Jodon.

               Survived by niece Mary Lou Uchaker, Alabama and eleven great nieces and nephews, 26 great-great nieces and nephews, 5 great-great-great nieces and nephews.

               Sister Maryann joined the School Sisters of St. Francis in 1947, where she graduated from high school. She accepted her first assignment in 1951. She graduated from Carlow College and earned a Masters in Reading & Literacy Education from Duquesne University.  She taught first grade at numerous Catholic schools; Ellsworth, Charleroi, North Side, Farrell, Erie, Canonsburg, Northern Cambria Catholic, Perryopolis, and Clymer, with longest at St. Stanislaus Catholic School for 13 years. She was also a substitute teacher for the Northern Cambria School District and Cambria Heights School District.

               She was very active in the Catholic faith and the School Sister of St. Francis in Pittsburgh.  The School Sisters of St. Francis | U.S. Province (schoolsistersosf.org)

               She enjoyed being outside, gardening, reading, praying, and guiding her family. She liked to keep very busy.

               A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, October 27, 2023, at Prince of Peace Roman Catholic Church, 811 Chestnut Ave., Northern Cambria with Rev. Mark E. Groeger officiating. Committal will be held at St. John the Baptist Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Barrett Funeral Home, 822 Philadelphia Ave., Northern Cambria.
