Phillips, Michael "Mickey" Sr., 84 of Northern Cambria, died May 21, 2003 at home. Born January 18, 1919, in Marstellar, son of Metro and Mary (Backa) Phillips. Preceded in death by parents, and granddaughter Shelby Lynn Lieb. Survived by wife, Margaret (Fabian), with whom he would have celebrated 62 years of marriage on June 2nd. Also survived by these children: Michael and Gwen (Wojno), Patricia Bosar, and Dennis married to Pam (Boothman), all of Northern Cambria, Donna married to Richard Endler of Nicktown, Bonnie married to Edward DeFazio of Ebensburg, and Denise married to Rodney Lieb of Akron, OH, 14 grandchildren, 1 step-grandchild and 16 great-grandchildren. Brother of Margaret LeGars, and Steve Phillips, both of Northern Cambria, Helen Kochinsky of Ebensburg, Ann Phillips, and Agnes Boring, both of Emeigh, Mae Gallagher of Bakerton, Elizabeth Marino of Johnstown, Kathryn Woods of Commodore, and Nancy Higgins of Hubbert, OH. U.S. Army veteran of WWII, where he served as a Guard Patrolman and served with 1962nd Service Command and Unit, Fort Ord, California. He guarded German prisoners; enforced military laws and maintained order; used machine guns, carbine, rifles, pistols, and shotguns and sub-machine guns; guarded prisoners in stockade and on ships. Retired from Barnes & Tucker Coal Co. Mines. Member of St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church. Member of Cambrian Hills Country Club, UMWA Local 1269, Bakerton, Barnesboro American Legion, and Young Men's Polish Legion. Friends received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at Long-Contres Funeral Home, Inc., Northern Cambria, where panachida will be held at 8:00 p.m. Parastas service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday followed by Funeral Mass of Divine Liturgy at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church, Fr. Emmanuel Rathapilly. Committal at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by local veterans organizations. In lieu of flowers, family requests memorial contributions be made to Cambria County Hospice Volunteers, 171 Lovell Ave., Suite 203, Ebensburg, PA 15931.
