Griffin, Ronald "Ron", 102 of Portage, Indiana, formerly of Northern Cambria died December 14, 2015 at Brookdale Senior Living. Born September 23, 1913 in Houtzdale, son of Joseph and Louise (Todhunter) Griffin. Preceded in death by parents, wife of 64-1/2 years, former Dorothy E. Birchall on January 5, 2002, brothers Paul and 3 year old Melvin, sisters, LaRue Carlson and Delores Kuhn, grandchildren Melinda L. Vargo and great- grandchildren Brandon and Colby Vargo. Survived by daughter Karen Diane Fleming, Griffith, IN; grandchildren Michele L. Watters, Melissa L. and Ryan Sullivan and Michael Vargo; and great-grandchildren Madolyn, Gabrielle and Zackery Sullivan, Tara and Sean Watters. Brother of Betty Louise Griffin of Northern Cambria and Clifford J. Griffin and wife Nancy, Wickliffe, OH. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Member of St. John's United Methodist Church since 1929, where he taught Sunday School and was very active in all church activities. Employed with Barnes and Tucker Co. for 50 years and retired as a mining engineer in 1982. Received Coal Mining Instructor Diploma in 1946 from Pennsylvania State College. Taught first aid and mine supervision classes for 25 years for Barnes and Tucker Co. Received Mine Foreman, First Grade certificate in 1949, Professional Engineer license. Member of American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers since 1968. Received Professional Land Surveyor License . Became lifetime member of Pa Society of Land Surveyors in 2000. After retirement, taught mine supervision classes for Inland Steel. Former member of North Barnesboro Cemetery Board. Ron wished to thank and have the following people acknowledged for their wonderful help over the years: Henry "Cooney" Caldwell, Jack Emerick, Galen Seese and Dennis Sheehan. Friends will be received from noon until time of funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Friday at Long-Contres Funeral Homes, Inc. Northern Cambria. Rev Darlene Wiewiora . Interment North Barnesboro Cemetery.
