Hanson, Verner W., 85, of Ebensburg, formerly of Barnesboro, died August 11, 2002 at Memorial Medical Center, Johnstown. Born December 22, 1916, in Barnesboro, son of John and Hildur (Berglind) Hanson. Preceded in death by parents and brothers Gustav and Fred J., sisters Viola McCann and Anna Johnson. Survived by sister, Elizabeth Sherwin of Northern Cambria, and brother George of Dallas, TX and several nieces and nephews. He graduated from Spangler High School and attended Indiana State Teachers College. Two years later he began teaching in Cambria County Elementary Schools. Over the years he obtained a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Pittsburgh and taught at Northern Cambria High School until his retirement in 1978. He was affiliated with the Barnesboro American Legion, Post # 508, Retired Public School Employees Association and the National Retired Teachers Association. During the years 1941 - 1945 he served in North Africa and Italy with the United States Army Air Force as 1st Lieutenant with the 359th Air Service Squadron, 60th Air Service Group, 15th Airforce , then served as Captain in the United States Air Force Reserve. Because of Verner's love of education and his commitment to young minds, it was his wish that his estate establish the Verner W. Hanson Endowment Scholarship. This scholarship will provide financial assistance to talented and deserving graduates from Northern Cambria School District, desiring enrollment at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Friends received from 11:00 AM until time of funeral service at Noon Tuesday at Long-Contres Funeral Home, Inc., Northern Cambria. Interment Wednesday, at 11:30 AM at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA. Family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to The Verner W. Hanson Endowment Scholarship, c/o Ameriserve Trust Dept., P.O. Box 520, Johnstown, PA 15907. A tree will be presented to the family in living memory of Mr. Hanson by Long-Contres Funeral Home.
